What about poo?
Poo goes down the toilet where it should be, not in your washing machine…
This is the most asked question, but is one of the simplest to answer. I am a clean freak when it comes to my nappies so I always clean off a poo nappy first and then it goes in the poo nappy lidded bucket in my bathroom. This method has meant I have never had any poo stains or stinks in the nappies or any lingering smells in the house. Dry pailing your rinsed nappies works.
Step by step
Hold the fleece or disposable liner over the loo so the worst drops off. Then there are a few ways you can get remaining poo cleaned away without having it hanging around for up to 2 days:
- I am one of the lucky few to have a shower head that reaches to my toilet. This was a complete game changer for me and is the easiest most convenient solution.
- If you aren’t as lucky you can install a “douche” (water sprayer/hose) on the side of your toilet which will probably actually rinse poo away even better than a shower head. These can be picked up online for around £20
- If you have a built-in toilet and can’t access the pipes easily then you may have to use your shower head to spray the excess poo off your liners and wipes clean into an extra bucket in your bath or shower cubicle, and then flush that down the toilet. You will need to keep this bucket clean.
- Flushing your toilet and rising your liner under the stream can also work, although I find my modern toilet doesn’t flush long enough so this would be my last resort. This method can be used when you are away from home. It’s called “Sluicing”.
I have read of people using a “poo knife” but this just sounds gross and I can’t class it as a viable option when a baby gets mobile.
Remember
Never fill your bucket with liquids to soak your nappies it just breeds bacteria, rots your nappies and creates smells you don’t want. This is the one time you really shouldn’t listen to your mum or your gran.
Wring/squeeze excess water out of the nappy, liners and boosters as you go and then wash your hands thoroughly after.
