Best pads for heavy periods

When it comes to heavy periods, reusable or cloth pads are the most absorbent option.

I have recommended pads to women who have previously been left with no choice but to resort to wearing both the largest absorbency tampon, in combination with the longest disposable pads, and still suffered from leaks. Wearing two pads at once or wearing two pads at night is more common than you might think.

Yet I have empowered these women so they they can now wear just one reusable pad overnight for 12 hours or more before having to change!

It sounds like a miracle - but it’s totally true. You can ask them in my Facebook Group.

Reusable period pads for heavy flow are, in my opinion, more absorbent than period pants too…even the ones that go halfway down your thigh like a cycle short to make you believe that they are the most absorbent.

Common misconception

The truth is the layers of concentrated absorption in a reusable pad are superior to any other menstrual product. Heavy absorbency period pants may come with an absorbent panel that goes all the way up to the back waistband, but blood never flows that far. And there are more of you telling me you have issues with leaking at the front from period underwear, and not even the back…

Front bleeders are as much of a thing as front sleepers…

Layers where you need it

A pad concentrates multiple absorbent layers in the one area, between your thighs, and that is where you need it if you experience heavy periods.

I’ve always said that quality really counts. But the construction of a reusable pad is way more reliable than period pants or disposables because they are finished with quality sewn seams that do not leak.

So what are the best options when it comes to heavy absorbency pads?

The Mega-Mega and Mega pads by Wear ‘em out are my number one recommendation for heavy periods. The Mega-Mega pad is ideal for post partum or the heaviest days of a normally heavy period, and particularly if your flow means you resort to as much protection overnight as I described above. The Mega pad is also amazing for more normally heavy flow, or say day 3-4 if the extreme example above is your benchmark.

I love the unique design of these pads because the lengthways layout of the dual snaps, actually holds the pad solidly in place better than any other pad. Which is what you need to feel secure whilst you are sleeping or just carrying on with your day.

Their ergonomic shape curves well to the body and will cushion you all night long. Like a “duvet for your undercarriage” in the words of the fabulous Lauren, the founder of Wear ‘em out, and all round straight talking powerhouse boss babe.

You just can’t go wrong with these pads!

Slimmer than the first option, Elskbar Heavy Flow pads are also the softest choice I am recommending in this blog. You can’t unfortunately tell from this product image, but the widest part of the pad should be worn at the front and it’s this part which is shaped a little bit wider than a “standard” pad making it ideal if you tend to be a front bleeder (or front sleeper).

These pads are particularly beautifully designed with a soft bamboo natural finish which in truth you will hardly tell you are wearing. In my opinion, whilst the Wear ‘em out heavy absorbency pads are almost designed to feel like you know they are there and that they are doing the job brilliantly, the Elskbar heavy flow pad is in comparison more subtle and lightweight. The bamboo velour is also ideal for sucking up “gushes” thanks to it’s slightly longer pile.

If you are more into natural prints, you will love the range of styles available. These pads have the ability to make you feel pampered as well as protected. I am also the only UK website to stock these pads, so they are a genuine scandi living exclusive.

My final recommended cloth pad for the heaviest of flows are an absolute classic reusable pad. Baba & Boo really did create a benchmark with their Extra Large sanitary pads and they are often my first recommendation too for those of you who tell me you’re curious to try pads for the first time, but looking to stick to a budget.

Whether bought as a single pad or pack of 2 these pads are phenomenal value and they are one of my best selling products for a reason. So popular now they are actually quite hard to come by, I always expect to be selling out of these pads so don’t wait. They honestly might not be here if you don’t snap them up!
